New name for ‘London’ Oxford Airport
20.08.09
Oxford's airport has been rebranded as London Oxford Airport, the ninth UK airport to use the capital's name, despite it being nearly 60 miles from the city centre. The company is already operating under its new name, with a headline on its website proclaiming ‘Welcome to London Oxford Airport.’
The airport currently serves business customers, private plane owners and a flying school. The move comes a month after revelations that the airport operators were in talks with carriers about starting up daily business flights to European capitals, and weekly tourist charters. Operators hope the change will bring in more business, but heritage campaigners have slammed the move, not least because the airport, in Kidlington, is nearly 60 miles from the centre of London.
The airport is owned by billionaire brothers David and Simon Reuben through holding company Aldersgate Investments. A spokesman for the company denied claims that the change was to encourage charter flights to operate from Oxford.
