Group stage protest at East Midlands Airport
25.09.06
Protesstors broke through a security gate at Nottingham East Midlands Airport. The group of environmental campaigners used cutters to gain access through a fence.
Six outbound flights were delayed, after twenty four protestors staged a protest on a taxiway between two cargo holds. The group called 'Plane Stupid', claim the number of short-haul flights from the airport is affecting climate change.
The protest lasted for about four hours. Baptist Minister Rev Malcolm Carroll held a ceremony in memory of those 'who have died as a result of climate change.'
The protestors are part of the wider Climate Camp organisation, who recently held protests at Drax power station in North Yorkshire. A spokesman, Joss Garman, said: 'Aviation is the greatest contributor to climate change.'
Leicestershire police, Chief Supt Garry Forsyth said: 'Our officers were on scene within minutes and by the time they got there, airport security already had the demonstrators contained.'
