Norwich Airport parking price overhaul
28.01.08
The 15-minute free parking allowance for people dropping off or collecting passengers at Norwich Airport has been cut to five minutes, the Norwich Evening News reports. Bosses have defended the change, saying the price of longer stays would be cut.
Concerns were raised when the quarter-of-an-hour grace period was scrapped without warning by operator NCP last week, leading to complaints from passengers forced to pay £1.90 for just minutes spent in the car park. The move by airport parking operator NCP was overturned following the intervention of airport managing director Richard Jenner, but the relief for travellers was short lived.
At a meeting of airport and parking bosses late last week, an overhaul of the charging system was agreed. Under these new rules, parking will be free for the first five minutes, with motorists staying between 5 and 15 minutes charged 50p. Drivers staying for longer periods will be charged £1.50, rather than £1.90 previously. The new regime is expected to be introduced at the beginning of February.
Norwich Airport managing director Richard Jenner said the new system was a just solution for all concerned. He told the newspaper: 'We feel that it is a fair result for everyone and I hope people will see this as a fair charge. Five minutes is the same period used by lots of other airports. We feel it is ample time to drive in and offload and hopefully everyone will agree. And Fifty pence [for up to 15 minutes] is not an extortionate amount.'
