Residents anger over Norwich Airport night flight fees

Local residents are angry after Norwich Airport admitted they receive extra money every time a flight passes through the terminal at antisocial times, the Norwich Evening News reports.
Some of those living near the airport, who are campaigning about night flight noise levels, say the penalty fees that airlines pay for breaking the curfew are an incentive to the airport to allow flights outside permitted fly times. But Norwich airport's owner, Omniport, says the penalty fee cash is eaten up by the extra costs involved in staff working beyond their hours.
In June 1988, Norwich City Council, Broadland District Council and the airport signed an agreement that there should be no regular scheduled or chartered flights between 23:00 and 06:00 and that airlines breaching this should be fined five times the landing fee.
Airport managing director Richard Jenner told the newspaper that he was happy to redraft the agreement but said it had no legal standing. He added: 'Last year the council found there had been 41 flights outside the restricted hours in 75 weeks but none of these breached the planning conditions. Sometimes flights are delayed for technical reasons and we are allowed to let them take off.'
