Record numbers fly off from Norwich Airport for festive hols
23.12.05
Thousands of people will be flying from Norwich airport to visit friends and family in the UK over Christmas and New Year. The arrival of budget airline Flybe at Norwich has led to a huge number of bookings to other UK cities over the festive season - with Belfast and Edinburgh being the most popular.
Others are choosing to escape the winter blues and find sun or with the Canaries - Lanzarote and Tenerife - being the number one destination for sun seekers and the French Alps tops for skiing.
Louise Wilkinson, head of marketing Norwich Airport, said she anticipated record passengers to fly from the city airport this Christmas with the peak days for travel being yesterday and today.
She said: 'In November 2005 overall traffic was up 34 percent on last year. International scheduled traffic was up 48 percent and domestic scheduled traffic was up 86 percent. Charters were down 25 percent and this was mainly due to our reduction in city breaks 2005. We anticipate December will also be up 34 percent so there will be record numbers.'
She said the increase in scheduled flight traffic was down to the new routes offered by Flybe well as greater awareness of what the airport offered. Six thousand five hundred people are already booked to fly on Flybe out of Norwich airport between December 23 and January 3.
