Norwich Airport watchdog criticise new departure tax
16.03.07
A Norwich Airport watchdog has criticised airport bosses for failing to consult on plans to introduce a new £3 per passenger departure tax, the Eastern Daily Press reports. The Norwich Airport Consultative Committee, said they felt as if they had been 'run over' following news of the tax and that they plan to hold an emergency meeting with bosses.
Broadland District and Norfolk County Councillor, Shelagh Gurney, as well as a member of the committee, said the first thing members knew about the tax was reported in the news. Chairman of the Committee, John Pennells, said he was shocked at the tax and wanted to call a meeting with airport management.
However the Managing Director of Norwich Airport, Richard Jenner, said the tax was a commercial issue and not in the committee's remit as it was set up to consult on community issues. Mr Jenner said the committee is being consulted regarding the expansion plans for which the tax will be imposed but added that the tax was never mentioned at the last meeting as it was a confidential matter at that point.
