Norwich Airport to introduce £3 development fee

Passengers are to be charged an extra £3 every time they fly out of Norwich Airport in a scheme to fund new facilities, the BBC reports. Newquay airport intorduced a similar scheme last year, with their development fee raising £160,000 a month.
The new Airport Development Fee (ADF) will be used to make improvements to the runway and to improve check-in areas, shops, parking and customer services. The charge, £3 for adults and £1 for children aged between two and 15, comes into force on 2 April. It will be payable at departure from special ticket machines managed by car park operator NCP.
The announcement of the fee comes as the airport announced a five-year, £18m investment package. It follows the sucessful introduction of a £5 fee at Newquay airport last year. This fee, which raises around £160,000 a month for the airport, has allowed it to raise funds to invest in a range of new facilities and upgrades, and has not hit passenger numbers.
Managing director Richard Jenner told the BBC: 'This charge allows us to make a step change at Norwich in the provision of facilities for both airlines and passengers. Without this small charge made to every passenger it simply would not be possible for us to put this level of investment into the airport.'
'The growth provided by the ADF investment will double the number of jobs created by Norwich International within the next five years as well as providing more choice, better value and greater comfort to passengers.'
