Norwich Airport in trouble over late flights
10.03.06
City council leaders are to investigate if Norwich airport has been in breach of planning conditions by allowing flights to arrive after 23:00. The authority's scrutiny committee has launched the probe after complaints about late flights in December. It could decide at its meeting today to take enforcement action against the airport.
Under planning conditions, the only time that flights can arrive after 23:00 are emergencies where there's a risk to life, where aircraft require immediate landing or are diverted from another airport, or to avoid delays to passengers of scheduled and charter flights.
The city council received a complaint from a local resident about five flights which took place after 23:00 in December. Four were related to delayed inbound flights from Lapland and the subsequent take-offs; the other was apparently a football charter following the home fixture against Burnley on December 28.
Norwich airport's managing director Richard Jenner said: 'We are aware of the conditions and try to work within them. On these occasions in December flights were delayed and we felt it was in the best interests of those concerned to go ahead with the flights. Do we really want to send flights from Lapland, with children on board, to Stansted?'
