Newcastle Airport refurbishment work launched

Work has started on a £3.2m refurbishment to Newcastle Airport, which bosses say will cut waiting times for passengers. It will see a three-storey 5,000sq ft annex built to house a bigger security area, which is on schedule for completion in the spring. Designed by David Coundon, architectural director at North East design company Space, the extension will envelop the airport’s Metro link bridge.
Graeme Mason, airport planning and corporate affairs director, said: ‘After the New Year break, customers will start seeing the building extension take shape alongside the existing terminal. We want to make customers’ journeys through security as quick and efficient as possible.’
In recent months the airport has been revamped to increase the number of passport inspection desks from four to six.
