29.05.09
A light aircraft came off the runway at Newcastle Airport yesterday, causing disruption to other flights. The four-seater single engine aircraft veered off on to the grass yesterday afternoon causing its nose wheel to collapse and damaging the propeller. Only the pilot was on board and he was not injured.
Five flights were diverted - four to Durham Tees Valley and on to Edinburgh Airport, two outbound flights were cancelled and five other outbound flights were delayed by around 40 minutes because of the incident. An airport spokeswoman said its fire service was on the scene straightaway and the Air Accident Investigation branch had been informed. The runway reopened at 14:00.
