Passengers arrested at Newcastle Airport over in flight mobile phone calls
25.03.08
Three passengers were arrested at Newcastle Airport after they caused chaos on a flight by using their mobile phones.
The incident happened when an easyJet flight from Belfast to Newcastle headed into land just after 01:00 on Saturday morning. Bad weather meant the flight was delayed and the plane had to circle overhead. However, the restless passengers started making calls on their mobiles – an act banned by aircraft authorities as it can interfere with technical systems.
Concerned flight crew asked the three men to switch off their phones, but all refused and became abusive. When the plane touched down all three were arrested for threatening and abusive behaviour.
A spokesman for easyJet confirmed the incident. A spokesman for Northumbria Police added: 'We were called to Newcastle Airport following reports of three passengers being abusive to staff. When they got off the two 22-year-olds and a 23-year-old were arrested for abusive and threatening behaviour.'
