Newcastle Airport boss suspended
24.03.07
The chief executive of Newcastle Airport has been suspended. John Parkin has been temporarily relieved of his duties by the company which runs the airport, it was announced yesterday afternoon.
Mystery surrounds the exact cause of Mr Parkin's suspension, which one of the airport's main shareholders, Newcastle City Council, said was of 'great concern'. A spokesman for Newcastle International Airport Limited said an investigation was being carried out into 'certain personal contractual issues.' He said the company would not be making any further comment until the investigation was concluded.
Mr Parkin will have no further involvement in the day-to-day management of the company during the investigation. In his absence, Mr Parkin's duties are being performed by commercial director David Laws, the spokesman said. A new executive director, Simon Fisher, has been appointed as finance director and company secretary.
A spokeswoman for Newcastle City Council said: 'As a shareholder in the airport along with a number of other councils, this situation is of great concern to us. It would inappropriate for us to comment further on what is clearly a complex situation.'
With such a public suspension, it seems unlikely that Mr Parkin will return to the role.
