Jet2 to fly Newcastle - Gatwick after BA pulls out
22.11.06
Low-cost airline Jet2 has stepped in to take over flights from Newcastle to Gatwick after British Airways (BA) announced yesterday that it was scrapping the service. The new service will begin on 25 March next year.
BA said it had taken the decision to stop its Newcastle - Gatwick flights for 'commercial reasons'. The airline will continue to fly to Heathrow from Newcastle.
Jet2, which already operates 13 routes from Newcastle, is to take over the Gatwick route shortly after BA stops its flights. The budget airline plans to operate three flights a day on the route.
A spokesman for Jet2 said: 'Gatwick is the ideal London airport for business and for leisure travellers and is the perfect replacement to a long train or car journey to southern England.'
