Newcastle Airport expects 100,000 festive passengers

Christmas is one of the busiest times for Newcastle Airport, with 100,000 passengers passing through Newcastle Airport during this year's festive period. This equates to just over 10,000 passengers per day between Christmas Eve and New Year's Day.
Chris Sanders, head of aviation development at the airport said: 'More and more people are choosing to go away for Christmas and the New Year, whether it be to join friends and family or simply to catch some winter sun. We are expecting around 100,000 people to take to the skies between Christmas and New Year, flying direct to and from over 60 destinations worldwide.'
He said people were seeking sunshine this year and were heading off to exotic destinations such as Dubai, Tunisia and Egypt. On Christmas Day itself, over one thousand passengers will be taking one of 14 scheduled and charter flights to and from Las Palmas, Dubai, Alicante, Paris and Malaga.
However, Mr. Sanders had a warning for Christmas travellers. Party poppers and Christmas crackers are being seized from North-East holidaymakers - because they are explosives and some contain banned items such as pen knives. Neither items can be carried in hand or hold luggage - in other words they can't go on flights at all.
