Newcastle Airport launch new smartphone app

Newcastle Airport has launched a new smartphone app for travellers. Previously the airport offered only basic information such as flight times via a mobile version of its website. Now they have a new 'feature-packed app', Graeme Mason, planning and corporate affairs director, said
He said: ‘Newcastle Airport is committed to providing its customers with an excellent service. Good communication is essential to this and smartphone apps are an extremely effective way of connecting with our passengers.'
‘Our flight times are available on our mobile website as normal, but this new StreamThru app adds more options – text messages alerting travellers to local travel problems, notices of any delays, and information about the airport. This is all available on the return journey as well, making everything that much easier.’
The app, which can be downloaded free, can tell passengers, as they drive to the airport, if their flight is on time and warn them of any traffic delays. At the airport it can provide all of their flight information, track delays, record where their car is parked, and provide maps of the terminal with offers from shops in the departure lounge. Then when the traveller reaches their destination, the app can show them a weather forecast, travel guide and local events guide.
The use of new technology by the airport to keep passengers up to date follows the success of the company’s Twitter feed, @NCLairport, which is followed by more than 3000 people and organisations. This has proven particularly useful at notifying people of disruption during bad weather. The next stage in the airport’s social media plan is an improved presence on Facebook, allowing even more passengers to communicate directly with the airport.
