Chemical alert at Newcastle Airport
20.07.07
Firefighters were called to Newcastle Airport yesterday after building workers unearthed four chemical canisters - one of which burst into flames. The substance is not thought to be explosive, there were no injuries and no disruption to flights.
The airport said the four canisters were discovered during work on a water main adjacent to the airport's freight village yesterday morning. One of the containers caught fire and the area was cordoned off.
An airport spokeswoman said: 'Whilst completing excavation work on a new water main at the airport, Northumbrian Water discovered four canisters containing an unidentified chemical substance. These canisters have been unearthed in an area of grass adjacent to the airport's freight village. The substance contained within the canisters is not thought to be explosive.'
'The affected area has been made safe and the situation poses no risk to the airport or its customers. Once the substance has been identified, a specialist waste management team will remove the canisters from the airport site.'
Access to the airport is unaffected and an alternative route to the freight village has been established.
