Flights more punctual at Newcastle Airport

Flight delays for passengers leaving Newcastle Airport were slashed in the final three months of 2007, figures revealed yesterday. Data released by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) showed that 79% of flights were on time - defined as up to 15 minutes late - a 3% improvement on the same period 12 months previously. The airport also enjoyed a two-minute reduction in the average length of time flights were delayed, falling from 14 minutes to 12 minutes.
But whilst the average length of schedule flights delayed fell, delays on chartered flights increased. The proportion of chartered flights on time was 76%, down from 80% a year earlier. The average delay of chartered flights from the airport also jumped by two minutes in 12 months. However, chartered flights operating from the hub account for just 10% of flights.
Chris Sanders, head of airline relations, said: ‘Our flight punctuality record for the last quarter of 2007 shows us to be one of the best- performing airports in the country, significantly outperforming the national average. We are not complacent, however, and we will continue to work closely with our airlines and handling agents to improve our punctuality record still further, even though virtually all delays are out of the airport’s direct control.’
