Plane smoke causes ground emergency at Newcastle Airport
17.08.07
Air passengers were removed from a plane at Newcastle Airport yesterday after the captain spotted smoke in the cockpit.
The drama struck the KLM flight to Amsterdam from Newcastle shortly after 06:00. The Boeing 737 had just been taxied into position when the smoke was seen and the captain ordered an evacuation. As a precaution, a ground emergency was declared, with the alarm raised to nearby fire stations.
A spokesman for the fire service said: 'We received a call at about 06:25 from the airport. It was treated as a full emergency. Ten appliances were mobilised to the airport after reports of smoke coming from the cabin of the plane.'
The aircraft was placed back on the stand as fire crews were called to investigate. After a series of checks, it was declared safe but a new part had to be fitted before the plane could leave for the Netherlands, which caused a 5 hour delay.
