Newcastle Airport denies loss of London link claims

Newcastle Airport and British Airways have denied suggestions the region’s air links with London could be lost, the Journal reports. Hugh Lang, the boss of Durham Tees Valley Airport, said British Airways could axe their service from Newcastle to Heathrow in the next 18 months after bmi axed its flights from Teesside to the capital, blaming the fees imposed by Heathrow operator BAA. But Newcastle Airport chief executive Dave Laws has been joined by BA bosses in rubbishing the claims that the route is under threat.
Mr Laws told the newspaper: ‘We are taken aback by the comments Hugh made yesterday, which we absolutely do not agree with. Our British Airways service to Heathrow connects the North East region to London and the rest of the world, and is of critical importance to the region. All regional air services are feeling the effects of the recession, but this route is one of the busiest in the UK.’
A BA spokesman added: ‘Comments concerning British Airways services between Newcastle and Heathrow are unfounded and no more than sheer speculation. The aviation industry is facing the most challenging trading environment in its history and BA keeps every part of its business under constant review to ensure that it is operating efficiently. However, we have no plans to change our operation at Newcastle. Our Newcastle operation is an important part of our UK regional network and one of the most efficient.’
