Major roadworks near Newcastle Airport
16.07.09
Passengers travelling to Newcastle Airport from next week until the end of September have been warned that major road works will be taking place on the A1. As a result of these works, journeys to the airport will be affected.
Work to strengthen the Allerdene Bridge will affect travel between Team Valley and the Angel of the North, on both the northbound and southbound carriageways. This will begin on July 25 and will last for 10 weeks.
A contra-flow will be put in place on the northbound carriageway while the southbound carriageway will be closed. The northbound slip road at Kingsway, Team Valley, and the southbound off and on slip roads at Eighton Lodge, near the Angel of the North, will also be shut.
Passengers are advised to allow considerable extra time for their travel to the airport during the period of the works. Although airlines are aware of the works, they will not accommodate passengers who arrive late for check-in, the airport has warned.
