Laser incident at Newcastle Airport
15.11.09
A laser was shone into a plane approaching Newcastle Airport, potentially endangering the lives of more than 150 passengers, the Chronicle reports. Police are hunting those responsible for shining the device at the aircraft as it flew over the Battlehill Estate, in Wallsend, North Tyneside.
The pilot on the inbound easyJet flight from Bristol to Newcastle reported seeing a green laser shone at the plane at around 21:00 on Thursday night. Fortunately, the pilot was not affected and the Airbus 319 landed safely with its 160 passengers onboard at Newcastle Airport.
Police immediately carried out checks of the area and started additional patrols, which will now continue. Inspector Pam Bridges, of Wallsend Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: ‘I want to remind people of the dangers of shining lasers at aircraft and also to point out the penalties, including custodial sentences, which are available to the courts.'
