Lufthansa passengers up 78% at Newcastle Airport

Lufthansa increased the number of passengers carried to and from Newcastle Airport by over 78 percent during 2008, despite the economic downturn and record fuel costs. The passenger figure of 36,526 was an increase of more than 16,000 on the figures for 2007.
Newcastle was way ahead of the airline's average increase in 2008 and also the top ranking UK airport for passenger growth in 2008. Marianne Sammann, Lufthansa General Manager UK & Ireland, said: ‘To show any overall increase in passengers for 2008 is an achievement in view of the economic challenges all UK businesses faced towards the end of the year, but our Newcastle growth is outstanding. It confirms that our confidence in the North East, when we increased our capacity from the start of the winter 2007-08 timetable, was justified.'
‘The figures also prove that an increasing number of people wanting to travel the world from the North East prefer to make their onward connections through Lufthansa's mini-hub at Düsseldorf instead of the congested London airports.'
‘Twenty-one percent of our passengers from Newcastle in 2008 took advantage of the quick and easy onward connections we offer through Düsseldorf where our minimum connection time is just 35 minutes.'
