A German national has appeared in court accused of trying to smuggle a huge stash of cocaine into the North East, the Journal reports. Sascha Zimmermann, 29, was stopped by officials at Newcastle Airport on Sunday evening. They seized his luggage and a search revealed two smaller bags inside lined with what is believed to be up to 5 kilograms of the Class A drug with a potential street value of up to £250,000.
Mr Zimmermann, a German national who has previously lived in Amsterdam, had landed at Newcastle Airport after boarding a flight in Paris. He was charged with being involved in the importation of illegal drugs.
