09.01.10
Six passengers were arrested after they returned from Tenerife, accused of trying to bring duty-free cigarettes and tobacco back into the country, the Echo reports. Customs officials at Newcastle Airport seized 20,000 cigarettes and 200kg of tobacco from luggage of the passengers. They estimate the unpaid duty on the items was £33,000.
The suspects, aged in their teens to mid-30s, were arrested as they tried to walk through the 'nothing to declare' channel. All of the tobacco and cigarettes were confiscated and will be destroyed.
