Hoax bomb notes on Newcastle Airport flight
07.08.08
A holiday flight returning to Newcastle Airport flew across the Atlantic despite a passenger finding a note claiming there was a bomb on board. The hand-written note was found in a toilet 20 minutes into the flight from the Dominican Republic.
After two more notes were discovered, the pilot left the cockpit to see for himself. However, he decided the notes were a hoax and continued with the flight rather than divert to the nearest airport.
The Thomsonfly flight TOM2592 from Punta Cana landed at Newcastle Airport on time on Monday morning. The airport was informed and the emergency services were scrambled to the runway to await the flight's arrival. They stood down after police carried out a search of the plane after passengers had disembarked.
A spokeswoman for Thomsonfly confirmed there had been a ‘security incident’ and said the matter was in the hands of the police. Northumbria Police said three notes handwritten on paper towels, had been found and had ‘all the hallmarks of a hoax’.
