A BA employee who worked at Newcastle Airport has who spent more than £16,000 using customers' credit card details has been jailed for 32 months. Karl Gallagher, 26, of Trafalgar Road, Washington, admitted five charges covering 60 offences of fraud.
Newcastle Crown Court heard he used customers' credit card details to book holidays, hotels, and even order pizza. His con was uncovered after Northumbria Police received information from Sussex Police that a group of holidaymakers arriving at Newcastle Airport had paid for their holiday using another person's credit card.
Officers from Newcastle investigated and identified Mr Gallagher as being behind the transaction. It was discovered he worked for BA as a booking agent at their Newcastle Business Park call centre, which entailed booking flights for customers using their credit card details.
The 26-year-old confessed to stealing money from the elderly because they ‘would not realise they had been conned’. He was arrested and a search of his home and car was made, where officers found a large number of credit card details written on scraps of paper.
A BA spokesman said: ‘We have robust practices to keep cases like this to a minimum and we take it very seriously.’
