04.11.07
IT company Waterstons has been selected as North of England entrant in an excellence scheme, for the work it is doing at Newcastle Airport. The County Durham company has been short listed for the best small business IT strategy accolade in Computing magazine's Computing Awards for Excellence, for its upgrade of the airport's information system.
Waterstons devised a four-year IT strategy for the airport in 2003, to support its continued growth. This has seen Waterstons project manage and implement technologies including a new telephony solution and an interactive voice recognition system. The flight information system has been upgraded and a new stand planning tool has been introduced to manage aircraft movement on the ground at the airport.
Newcastle Airport's IT support manager, Darren Kelly, said: 'The project was an overnight success. The achievement was testament to months of planning and preparation, training, testing and retesting, as well as gaining user buy-in from the departments affected.'
