A man was arrested and a flight delayed for more than an hour after a bag containing leaking chemicals was found in luggage at Manchester Airport. The man, who is understood to work in the chemical industry, was later released on bail.
Police were called to terminal two on Monday when a strong smell was reported coming from a bag about to be loaded onto a KLM flight from Manchester to Amsterdam. Two bottles of a chemical, later revealed to be ethylamine, were found and Police also searched a house on Bellot Street in Cheetham Hill, Manchester, where a similar chemical was recovered.
The two workers who handled the bag were taken to hospital as a precautionary measure and later discharged. A man who owned the bag was arrested on suspicion of endangering an aircraft and has been bailed until 5 January. The flight departed 80 minutes late.
A spokesman for Manchester Airport said: ‘Although the substance involved was not prohibited, the passenger should have declared it at check-in and ensured that it was robustly sealed. Police are investigating this matter, although there is no suggestion that this incident is terrorism-related.’
