Manchester Airport refueller strike goes ahead

Workers who refuel aircraft at Manchester Airport are to strike this weekend in a row over pay. The decision was taken after a meeting late on Friday between the Unite union and managers of ASIG, which provides refuelling services for around 70% of planes at the airport, failed to resolve a pay dispute. The strike begins at 05:00 on Monday and lasts until 12:45 on Tuesday. An overtime ban is also being considered. A spokesman for ASIG insisted there would be no disruption to passengers and said staff were fairly paid.
Earlier this month, the airport workers voted for industrial action after being told they would not be getting a pay rise. Unite regional officer Lawrence Chapple-Gill said ASIG had failed to make a ‘fair and decent offer to avoid any potential disruption during the peak August Bank holiday weekend’. He said: ‘These workers cannot afford to accept a derisory 0% pay deal. They do a dangerous job and deserve a fair wage for it, and we are determined to see that they get it.’
A spokesman for ASIG replied: ‘Whilst we understand that the current climate is tough for everybody, we believe that we have been sensible during negotiations, without being ungenerous. ASIG fuellers' pay at Manchester Airport has increased by 46% since 2002, during which inflation has risen by only 21%. There will be no disruption to passengers as we have a contingency plan in place.‘
