Passengers complain about passport check delays at Manchester Airport
30.01.08
Delays at passport control at Manchester Airport have been ranked the worst in the country by passengers. Paul Goggins, MP for Wythenshawe and Sale East, has described the delays as 'unacceptable' and has had talks with immigration minister Liam Byrne over the problems.
Disgruntled passengers say they often have to wait more than an hour to get through the checks. Others have written on travel website ukairportdelays.co.uk that passport control is often under-staffed. Now Manchester Airport's Users' Advisory Group has complained to the government about 'poorly staffed' immigration desks amid concerns of problems this summer.
The Border and Immigration Agency, set up last year to tighten security, says it is working hard to reduce delays. Mike Lowe, assistant director for border control in the north, said: 'Since the summer, we have increased the number of Border and Immigration Agency staff by 17 and I am looking at ways of increasing staff even further.'
An airport spokesman said the airport had been in talks with immigration minister Liam Byrne. It had been told more staff would be provided and that the situation would improve in time for the summer.
