Group 4 could lose Manchester Airport security role
29.01.09
Group 4 Security (G4S), who are in charge of X-raying baggage at Manchester Airport, face being stripped of its contract after an internal investigation, the Manchester Evening News reports. The company, which screens luggage carried in aircraft holds, had its commercial operations examined by the airport over the Christmas holidays. The newspaper reports that the investigation found Group 4 had been over-billing for staff who were not working.
Two managers were suspended, and the Evening News reports that the airport is looking to end the contract. G4S would continue to X-ray bags during a transition period and an airport spokesman said airport security had not been affected.
The move puts around 140 jobs under threat, although G4S confirmed that baggage staff at Manchester will be transferred to whichever company takes over the operations should it lose the contract. The firm will continue similar operations, as well as check-in security, at two of MAG's other airports, East Midlands and Bournemouth.
