Manchester Airport wins award – but loses trophy
22.01.10
Manchester Airport bosses were celebrating after winning a travel industry ‘Oscar’ – only to be brought down to earth with a bump when someone stole the trophy from the awards ceremony. After picking up the best regional airport in the Travel Weekly Globe awards, Managing director Andrew Cornish and commercial director Andrew Harrison left the award on their table while they were congratulated by industry colleagues, only to return and find the football sized award had gone.
The airport overcame competition from sister airports Bournemouth and East Midlands, as well as Birmingham, Cardiff and Robin Hood. The winners were decided by travel agents and a record 62,000 cast their votes – 10,000 more than last year. Manchester was praised for its environmental commitments and for making significant improvements in customer satisfaction surveys.
Mr Cornish said: I’m surprised that someone has taken the award to add to their own display cabinet. On the positive side, it is one less to polish every week. On a more serious note, to have won almost all of the major travel industry awards this year really underlines the effort and investment we have put into Manchester over the last few years. I’m delighted for the team who have been involved.’
