Coin slot trolleys cost jobs at Manchester Airport
21.03.09
Staff at Manchester Airport are facing the axe because of plans to fit coin locks to luggage trolleys, the Evening News reports. From May passengers will have to insert a pound or a euro to use the trolleys, which they will get back when they are returned. The move means that a number of the 46 workers who manage the fleet of 5,000 trolleys will lose their jobs.
The coin locks, identical to the system used in supermarkets, will also allow the airport to reduce the number of trolleys needed, with the older models scrapped. Mike Fazackerly, customer services director, told the newspaper: ‘We did a lot of research into the needs of our passengers looking into the options delivered at other airports.'
‘We want to provide passengers with world-class facilities but also want to keep our operation moving as efficiently as possible. Using this refundable coin-lock system allows passengers to take advantage of improved trolleys. This is a worldwide trend and increasingly, leading airports are introducing similar systems.’
Airport staff currently collect trolleys which are abandoned across the site, among their other duties. The locks, due to be introduced on May 1, will ensure they are returned to specific locations, ready for use by the next passenger.
