New software means only suspicious images from ‘naked’ scanners viewed

Manchester Airport is to change the way it uses its full body (or so called 'naked') scanners and security staff will no longer be looking at all the images the machines produce. The scanners were first installed at the airport last year as a trial in a bid to increase security measures, with their permanent placement confirmed following the failed terrorist attack on a US bound flight on Christmas Day.
Currently all images produced by the scanner are reviewed by security staff, however new software is being developed that will mean only suspicious images are reviewed. A spokesman for Rapiscan, which manufactures the scanners, told the Manchester Evening News: ‘If there's no threat then no image will be seen by a human operator and the person will be free to get on to the aircraft.’
