Airparks Manchester Airport car park closes
19.06.10
The Airparks Handford Dean Manchester Airport car park - used by around 14,000 holidaymakers a month - closed yesterday, just days before the start of the busy summer season, the Manchester Evening News reports. The sudden announcement has come as a shock to many, and even the car parking company's business partners have not been told about the closure yet.
The site, near Wilmslow, shut yesterday (Friday, June 18), disrupting the plans of thousands of passengers. Although people who have already booked will be accommodated at other sites near the airport, there is bound to be confusion, and the risk that some passengers miss flights.
Airparks told the newspaper that they had taken the 'difficult' decision to close after 11 years in operation because of uncertainty over the land, owned by Cheshire East council. Last year, around 168,000 motorists used the site – around 15 minutes from the airport – but a spokesman said failure to strike a long-term agreement for the land with the council gave them 'no option' but to close.
It is the second Airparks site in Manchester to close in just 15 months. Last March, the company shut its Manchester Gold car park in Wythenshawe. At the time the company said they 'reluctantly' made the move because the site, off Thorley Lane, had been sold and their lease was being terminated.
Airparks will continue to operate a car park at Carrington. The Handforth site employed 50 workers, who have been made redundant, but the company was hoping to recruit some of the staff on a casual basis to cover shifts at its Carrington site.
