Bomb scare at Manchester Airport
18.09.10
Part of Manchester Airport was closed yesterday after a suspect package was found in luggage passing through security checks. Police officers evacuated Terminal One and questioned three passengers. The other two terminals remained open.
Police and fire crews rushed to the scene at around 08:50 after security staff spotted a suspicious piece of hand luggage going through a screening machine. The whole of Terminal One was shut down and a cordon put in place causing huge disruption to flights, with thousands of passengers affected. All passengers and staff in the building were ordered to leave the premises and were asked to assemble outside the railway station near Terminal One.
It has been reported that the alert was raised by a security operator who was routinely scanning hand luggage. Bomb disposal officers examined the package and it was confirmed that it posed no threat to the public. Police officers spoke to the owner of the package, but a spokesman said no offences had been committed.
