Manchester Airport bosses didn’t know border controls relaxed

Manchester Airport bosses had ‘no idea’ that passport controls were relaxed over the summer, the MEN reports. It says that they only found out they were included in the list of 28 ports and airports where controls were relaxed in a national security row that has lead to the suspension and subsequent resignation of UK Boarder Agency boss Brodie Clarke.
The MEN has revealed that Manchester Airport bosses were ‘stunned’ by the revelation this week that controls had been relaxed at the hub. They had their own policies in place to deal with busy periods, including holding passengers on planes until queues had cleared, and were unaware that the UK Border Agency – whose staff carry out the checks – had relaxed security during peak summer months.
A Manchester Airport spokesman told the newspaper: ‘The UK Border Agency is responsible for immigration controls at Manchester Airport and we have no jurisdiction over the policies or processes involved in their passport checks.’
