Manchester Airport passengers up by over 30%

Passenger numbers at Manchester Airport were up by almost a third in April compared with the same month last year, when the volcanic ash cloud disrupted thousands of flights and closed UK airspace for six days. The airport handled 1.43m passengers last month, up from just over a million in April 2010, with a total of 13,114 flights against 10,400 a year ago, an increase of more than 26 percent.
The airport pointed to strong growth on scheduled international routes last month as an additional factor in the improved performance. The later Easter holiday period and extra Bank Holiday for the Royal Wedding also helped.
Manchester Airport managing director Andrew Harrison said: ‘While it is difficult to draw a direct comparison of April’s passenger numbers to last year due to the effects of the ash cloud, we are continuing to see growth at Manchester Airport, having welcomed a number of new services, which are proving to be very popular. Scheduled international traffic continued to show robust performance, with strong load factors on services to hubs such as Frankfurt, Paris and Amsterdam.'
'Scheduled traffic to North America was also up significantly, by 43 per cent, reflecting American Airlines re-starting its daily service to JFK, and Virgin’s new service to Las Vegas. In addition the existing services to New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and Atlanta are all doing well. The low-cost sector also continues to be an area of growth, especially Jet2 and easyJet, plus Ryanair also started five new routes halfway through the month.’
