16.12.11
Manchester Airports Group has appointed John Atkins as the director who will spearhead its £650m Airport City enterprise zone scheme. Mr Atkins is currently managing director of the group's property arm MAG Developments. His appointment comes as MAG prepares to formally approach the market for development partners for the 150-acre Airport City scheme, which will provide more than four million square feet of new business space over the next 15 years, including offices, hotel and leisure facilities, retailing, manufacturing and logistics.
A document detailing the opportunities will be released early next year, when a competitive process begins. Airport City is designed to enable Manchester compete with similar schemes in Barcelona, Frankfurt and Amsterdam. It was announced in March as one of the Government's enterprise zones. Companies locating within it will benefit from business rate discounts over 5 years. Etihad Airways is to locate its first European call centre there next year, creating around 160 jobs.
