New otter hotel at Manchester Airport
16.02.09
A secret location in countryside near Manchester Airport has been selected as an otter safe-haven. With funding and co-operation from the airport, Cheshire Wildlife Trust and helpers from a number of other agencies built the artificial otter holt - or 'otter hotel' - on the edge of the airport to support the species as it passes through the area, both as a resting place and as a possible breeding area.
The holt has been sited at a secret location away from human disturbance and will be monitored on a regular basis. Charlotte Harris, conservation director for Cheshire Wildlife Trust said: ‘Otters are a vulnerable species and this project creates extra habitat where otters can thrive and then hopefully disperse. In time, and with the right support, otters may once again become a more common sight in our rivers.’
