VLM axe Manchester – London City Airport flights
15.05.09
Belgian-based VLM, part of Air France/ KLM group, is to axe services between Manchester and London City Airport from the end of this month, it announced today. The airline also flies to both Antwerp and Rotterdam from Manchester, but those services have not been affected.
A spokesman for the airline told Crain's: ‘The route has been heavily loss-making and, in these tough economic conditions, we are impeded by unfair competition from a subsidised rail network and taxes that often make up over 50 percent of the overall fare. We would like to apologise to customers who have made bookings after May 31st for the inconvenience caused. All will be fully refunded.’
‘We would like to thank all regular flyers who have supported the airline on this route over the past 7 years and to reaffirm that VLM Airlines still remains committed to its profitable operations from Manchester. We will continue to serve the city with regular services to both Antwerp and Rotterdam.’
