European Airports to launch carbon reduction scheme
14.06.09
Airports in Europe will launch a new carbon measuring scheme that is aimed at reducing the impact their operations have on the environment this week. The Airport Carbon Accreditation programme will be the world’s first independently-verified certification scheme for measuring, reporting on and reducing carbon emissions that are generated by airport operations.
The programme will be launched at the start of the three-day Airports Council International (ACI) Europe annual assembly tomorrow at Manchester Airport. ACI say the accreditation programme is 'a result of the landmark resolution made at the assembly held last year in Paris, when airports jointly made a commitment to reduce carbon emissions with an aim toward eventually being carbon-neutral [from ground operations].'
Carbon emissions from all aspects of airport operations are included in the programme, which features a staged approach to implementation, as well as a means for verifying progress. The framework for the scheme involves several levels that include the measurement and recording of emissions, emission reductions, influencing emission sources outside direct airport control and ultimately offsetting emissions to achieve carbon-neutral status.
