Cable theft closes Manchester Airport train line
13.08.10
Rail passengers faced travel chaos yesterday morning after the Manchester Airport to Manchester Piccadilly line was forced to close due to cable theft. The railway line, which carries Northern Rail and First TransPennine Express services, was shut in both directions from 05:00 until noon after the theft of a power cable and two telecom cables at Slade Lane in Burnage, which caused signal failure.
The route carries six services an hour in each direction. Rail replacement buses were drafted in to transport passengers to their destinations, as engineers worked to repair the vandalised line, with holidaymakers travelling to catch flights at Manchester Airport suffering delays of around an hour on their journey.
