Iris scanners for Manchester Airport staff

A new iris-scanning security system is being introduced at Manchester Airport to improve security and tighten staff access to restricted zones. The new system, which uses biometric technology, will be rolled out across all three airport terminal service yards plus staff security lanes in the terminal buildings.
A camera at security check-points captures an image of the eyes of every worker passing through and compares their unique iris image to a picture held on record. The system was initially trialled at the Terminal 3 service yard and it proved so successful that it is now being introduced in all three terminals. All staff with access to areas inside the security scanners at the airport are being enrolled in a new iris-recognition system
Asha Williams, Manchester Airport's security and training manager, said: 'The trial of the technology has gone really well and we are now extending it to include two new areas of access to the restricted zone. We are always looking for new ways to simplify and further improve the robust security screening process for both passengers and staff. By harnessing this clever technology, we can achieve both those goals.'
The iris scanners will be used in addition to the current security systems. Staff will swipe their card and enter a personal pin number before entering a pod where a camera will check their iris.
A spokeswoman for the hub said that it was the first UK airport to use the system for staff access. The system is separate from the iris checking technology used by passengers in immigration control at the airport.
