The recession has taken its toll on passenger numbers at Manchester Airport, which slumped by 10 percent last month. A total of 2,036,957 passengers passed through the airport's three terminals in July, down from 2.3m in the same month last year.
There were nearly 150,000 fewer charter passengers (down 16 percent), while the number of scheduled travellers was down by just over 47,000 (4.4 percent). On domestic routes, passenger numbers were down by just over 32,000 (12.3 percent). Overall, there were 16,473 aircraft movements compared with 19,500 in July last year.
In the year to date, total passenger numbers at the airport have fallen 10.8 percent to 7,054,17. Freight was 29 percent down at 8,597 tonnes compared with July 2008. In the year to date, freight is down 35 percent at 32,281 tonnes.
A spokesman for Manchester Airport said it expected better figures for August because of a last minute bookings rush as the bad summer weather puts people off the idea of holidaying at home.
