Manchester Airport passengers down 5.9%
12.05.09
Passengers at Manchester Airport fell by 5.9% in April. However, this was an improvement on the falls of 18% in March, and 17% in February and 10.3% in January, as the timing of Easter (in April this year but March in 2008) boosted the April numbers. The airport said the latest figures were slightly ahead of expectations as business travel increased after the turn of the financial year.
Passenger numbers in April were down 93,942 to 1.4m, although international scheduled traffic saw a 0.11% rise boosted by new routes to France, Holland, Sardinia introduced by low costs carriers bmibaby and Ryanair. Charter traffic fell by 11.71%, as airlines cut capacity, but the airport said the figures were a marked improvement on previous months, no doubt boosted by Easter holidaymakers.
Looking forward, Crain's reports that Airport Co-ordination Ltd, the company which allocates landing slots at all UK airports, said capacity at Manchester Airport would fall by 8% over the airport’s 30 week summer schedule. ACL added that as the summer progressed capacity may fall even further, as airlines cut or combine flights on under performing routes.
