Manchester Airport to get more passport staff
12.02.08
Manchester Airport is to get 30 extra immigration officers to cut queues at passport control and strengthen security. The news comes a week after reports that immigration queues at the airport had been ranked the worst in the country by holidaymakers.
The Home Office is giving local Border and Immigration Agency chiefs extra cash to recruit the new officers, in addition to 17 extra staff recently added to the airport team. Mike Lowe, assistant director for border control in the north, said the news that Manchester Airport would get extra officers was 'brilliant news'.
He said: ‘We have to maintain the security of the border and to do that we have to check every traveller who arrives. There will be some queuing for passengers while we do this, but our aim is to minimise the disruption and we are working towards that in a number of ways.'
‘The good news is that we have been given money to recruit an extra 30 immigration officers. We have never had such an increase in officers in one fell swoop. In the past, it has taken ten years to increase staff by 20.’
