Anti-terror police are questioning a man on suspicion of terrorist offences after he was arrested at Manchester Airport on Friday. Anti-terrorism officers are also searching three properties following the arrest of Hassan Butt on Friday afternoon, when he was reportedly waiting for a flight to Lahore, Pakistan.
Manchester-born Mr Butt has spoken widely in the media about his past involvement with terrorist activity, claiming to have recruited British Muslims for al-Qaeda, He has previously claimed he recruited hundreds of fellow Muslims to fight for Osama bin Laden's terror network, however, he says he has now renounced terrorism. In an interview last month, he said: ‘I started realising it's not as black and white - how could I justify killing these people because these people are living amongst us.’
A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said armed officers were not involved in the arrest. He confirmed one of the properties being searched was in Bury and another was in north Manchester.
