Manchester Airport enjoyed a strong month for passenger numbers in August and remains confident for the future, despite the economic gloom. A total of 2.17m passengers passed through its terminals last month, a 3.69 percent year-on-year rise.
August was the fifth consecutive monthly increase, with the increasing passengers fuelled by continued growth on scheduled international services, which saw a 12.7 percent increase to 1.23m passengers. Charter passengers were down nearly 6 percent to 744,641 and domestic services saw an 8 percent drop to 191,670.
The airport handled a total of 16,523 aircraft movements, up 2.37 percent on August 2010. The amount of freight including mail declined by 15.2 percent to just over 9,000 tonnes. This financial year, which began in April, the airport has handled 9.36m passengers, up 9 percent on 2010.
