Manchester Airport plans business park
10.03.09
Manchester Airport has announced plans for a new business park called ‘Airport City’. It will cover a 60 acre site including the 30 acres just north of the airport which Manchester Airport Group Developments Ltd (MADL) bought recently from Burford Group for more than £15m.
Combined with the existing, council-owned Manchester Business Park, Airport City will be capable of providing up to 2m sq ft of space, MADL said. Manchester City Council chief executive Sir Howard Bernstein said: ‘We have harboured these ambitions for some time, but could not deliver them until the airport had acquired the necessary site.'
‘This provides us with one of the most strategic opportunities for generations. It will continue to reinforce Manchester Airport as one of the most important assets to be found anywhere in Europe. These plans will prepare us for the next 10 to 15 years.’
John Atkins, managing director of MADL, said Airport City would be similar schemes at airports in Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Barcelona. He said: ‘We need a Manchester solution, and the acquisition of this 30 acres means we will be able to deliver the scale of what we are looking to achieve.'
